Develop practical, hands-on seating and positioning skills with Spex Academy: Assess • Simulate • Support – A Hands-On Seating & Positioning Intensive Clinical Training.
Designed for occupational therapists, physical therapists and ATPs, this one-day course takes participants through a complete seating evaluation – from client-centred assessment and communication to biomechanics, mat assessment and postural support application.
Through demonstrations, guided labs, simulation activities and case-based problem solving, participants will practise identifying pelvic, trunk and lower-extremity postures, determining whether presentations are reducible, and translating assessment findings into practical seating solutions.
The day concludes with hands-on work using cushions, back supports, secondary supports, simulation vests and full wheelchair set-up activities.

Just how important is education?
At Spex Seating, we firmly believe in the importance of education. Our vision is to make a positive difference to people living with disabilities, along with the carers and therapists that support them. We believe that through education, we can make leaps and bounds towards achieving that vision!
By delivering the collective knowledge and experience contained within our specialist team, we can help therapists, health professionals, and distributors of Complex Rehab Technology achieve better client outcomes.

Participants learn how to identify pelvic, trunk, and lower extremity posture, determine whether postures are reducible or not, and translate those findings into practical support strategies.
The afternoon focuses on postural support product application through guided lab sessions and small-group problem solving using cushions, back supports, and secondary supports, culminating in a full wheelchair set-up lab using simulation vests and case examples.
The day is completed with group presentations, Q&A and a course review to reinforce key concepts and translate seating and positioning outcomes into functional participation.
Learning objectives
At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Organize 3 components of a comprehensive seating assessment.
- Apply client-centered evaluation strategies to identify and articulate seating goals and desired outcomes during a case-based trial assessment.
- Identify and relate 2 biomechanical principles to successful seating solutions.
- Differentiate 3 common postural presentations and describe their functional impact on occupation.
- Perform a thorough supine assessment to determine postural alignment.
- Complete a supported seated assessment (hand simulation) to identify postural support needs.
- Analyze assessment results using clinical reasoning to guide placement of the postural supports.
- Demonstrate the ability to custom contour postural supports based on common presentations for trial assessment.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of the postural supports created during the trial assessment in promoting outcomes and occupational performance during functional activities and participation.
