Diogo is 24 and studying law at university in Portugal. He has cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair, so having the right seating setup is important for getting through long days of lectures and study.

His mum, Susana, explains how Diogo was born prematurely, at 29 weeks, due to a placenta detachment, and he weighed just 1,260 grams. He was 9 months old when he was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. Susana describes how it was a huge impact, but from the beginning, Susana and Diogo’s father fought to give him the best life possible.

As Diogo grew, posture became an important focus.

“He crossed his legs a lot and leaned to one side. We searched for back supports that would help him stay upright, and cushions with a medial block so he couldn’t cross his legs. It’s very important for him to always have the right equipment to improve his posture.”

For more than 12 years, Diogo and his family have worked with Luis from Rehapoint, a Spex distributor in Portugal.

“Diogo is more than a client… he’s part of our history,” says Luis. “Since we introduced the Spex High Contour Cushion and the Manta Back Support, we’ve found the right solution.”

Luis explains that Diogo can now get through his day feeling stable and comfortable, without wasting energy trying to control his body. That means he can focus on studying and spending time with his friends.

For Diogo, the equipment is part of everyday life:

“My wheelchair is my biggest support. The cushion and backrest improve my posture, make me feel secure, and are essential for sitting through long classes. Comfort is what allows me to concentrate.”

With the right seating, Diogo can manage university life with more comfort and energy, supported by people who understand his needs.
